Minister's Moments

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas - that's one of my favorite Christmas songs. It reminds me of glistening decorations - Christmas trees, shopping for presents - toys for the kids. When it was written in the fifties, I think Christmas was a little bit simpler. Now, it begins to look like Christmas in the stores right after Halloween. Along with decorations, comes Black Friday (which now actually begins on Thanksgiving) we might see people standing in line, camping out in the cold and dark to get a bargain, pushing and shoving to get that special item before the other person does. What about peace and good will? Maybe it's not beginning to look a lot like Christmas after all!

We can complain (and we do) about extra store hours, crowded malls, angry people - and the total over-commercialization of Christmas. But it doesn't matter what other people do. It matters what we do. The most important lines of that song are But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be on your own front door - and - the things that will make them ring is the carol that you sing right within your heart.

So, how do we make it look like Christmas? Or rather, how do we make it look like we are celebrating the birth of our Savior? How do our doors look to the world? What songs are we singing? What message are we proclaiming with our voices?

This year I wish us a kinder, gentler Christmas. May we put less demands on our time, our energy, and our pocket-book. When we shop for gifts, I hope that we will think of others less fortunate and find some way to help - maybe Toys for Tots, Salvation Army or alternative gift giving (we have some catalogs available in the office). May we reach out to friends, old and new - maybe even reconcile a broken relationship. And in everything we do, may we worship the One who's birth we celebrate. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

I wish you and yours a blessed Advent and Christmas!

Peace and grace,

Pastor Pat
